Legal & General or Aviva Shares

I am looking to invest in some insurance company shares and have narrowed this down to L&G or Aviva. L&G are still paying a dividend but Aviva looks decent value and has a good p/e ratio. Any views/comments on these insurers or any others?

Why have you eliminated Phoenix?

Phoenix is also still paying a dividend.1

My father has held both L&G and Aviva shares for many years and he has always been happy with the dividends for his income, although Aviva has stopped paying their dividend at the moment. IMO insurers and bank shares and are relatively good value at the moment but they may be even better value depending on the trade deal outcome.1

As I'm mainly looking for good dividend payments then on reflection it may be better to buy some L&G and Phoenix. This is until its more clear on when Aviva will start paying dividends again.0

L&G has barely any business in the UK nowadays. It is selling its legacy book to Phoenix (indirectly - It is being sold to Reassure and Phoenix are buying Reassure). L&G are retaining corporate business.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. Just buy both to hedge your bets? Chesnara are another possibility, a bit like a smaller Phoenix.1

Have you considered reinsurances or insurances outside the UK?

I have to go for Aviva as I hold a sizeable number of shares and have no intention of reducing them.
They have always served me well and lack of dividends is not a problem for me. All portfolios should include at least one company in the insurance sector and my top rated one is definitely Aviva.1 -
