BT internet email

Today I've received an email from 'BTinternet' today saying I will no longer be able to get emails unless I change my email settings. It gives a link to Bt.com/help/emailsettings. Is this true or some kind of scam? or phishing whatever the word is. Does this sound legit? It talks about changing ISTP settings and talks about IMAP . I don't know what that means. As you may have gathered I am computer illiterate and this is all gobbledygook. Can anyone comment?

Do you have a BT email account?

It looks like it may well be legit - https://www.bt.com/help/email/updating-your-bt-email-settings
It's all to do with Yahoo changing their email servers, it's happened on Sky accounts and it looks like they're doing BT accounts now.

If you're concerned about these sort of email always go to the main site directly rather than following the attached links.

Are you sure it says ISTP and not SMTP?

There are two types of email protocol for accessing email from a mail server, POP3 (post office protocol v3) which allows emails to be downloaded directly off the mail server and on to your home computer, usually deleting the mail of the remote server in the process. IMAP (internet messaging access protocol) is another protocol for accessing email but unlike POP3 rather than downloading your emails it synchronises your email between your device and the mail server, the advantage of which is the email stays on the server where you can continue to access it from multiple devices.

SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) is the standard protocol to allow emails to be transferred between networks and servers, it controls your outgoing messages.
