Thanks everyone for your replies and stories. Really helpful to hear other people’s experiences.
We don’t yet have a date so not sure how long we’ve got. We will be having a clearout before hand as we do have some junk to clear!
I’ll get a few more quotes including some “man with a van” and see if we can work it out.
We are on a ground floor 1 bed flat now and don’t have huge amounts of stuff....but I think sometimes you don’t realise how much stuff you have until you move!
Selling our place to a landlord so there won’t be someone waiting to move in on the day, and the place we’re buying the people have already gone so no waiting that end either.

Personally I would get a van in a van they normally do 50 quid an hour and will probably get everything in a Luton can. I would never have done this before but I would get the bulky stuff moved by them and save yourself a few hundred quid.
  • I'd recommend using a removal company, I've broken my back helping people move houses before and it always takes longer and a lot more effort than people first expect and you always find stuff you don't need anymore that you don't necessarily want. I'd suggest a removal and managed storage company:
    1) to make moving quicker and easier and all your items are handle with care and stacked correctly during the move
    2) store any unwanted items until you find a place for them or sell them on
    Hope this helps :)
