Ticking Central Heating Pump

Hi

Can anyone help. I've just woke up this morning and noticed that my central heating pump is making an annoying ticking noise.

Any ideas?

  • Hi
You mean a kind of rustling noise?
Is it the pump itself? Vary the speed of the pump and see if it changes with the different speed.Cause is possibly a piece of solder caught in the impeller or something similar. Remove pump head and clean it.
Or it's pipework creaking in their clips or against something.

Oh and of course the worst one is the pump is wearing out, but that is usually a deeper knocking kind of noise.

No its definite a ticking noise, just like the ticking of a clock but faster.

I don't know much about these things so would not know where to find the pump head, let alone take it apart to clean it. If there is something stuck in it do you think it will eventually dislodge itself?

Pump was on top speed (3), have put it onto speed 1. Now it is stick ticking but quite abit quieter.

  • Hi

Yes it might free up after a while.
Put the pump back on 3 as the boiler might get upset at having a reduced flow rate through it.
When you changed the pump speed you were touching the pump head.Four large x head screws or four hex head screws hold it on to the body.

I guess there is no harm if I leave it for the timebeing to see what happens then, and indeed if it dislodges itself.

There is a safety warning there that says to disconnnect from the electricity supply before working on it, and I don't know how to do this.

I'm waiting for a plumber to come and fit two new radiators, hopefully before Christmas, so if it is still doing it then, I can get him to take a look.

Thanks for your reassurance - this morning I thought I had a time bomb in the house!
