Sudden death of leaves on potted apple tree

Yes, I'm hopeless of actually getting rid of something plantlike. I'll find a corner for it. My friend pulls out plants without ever cutting back for another flush of bloom. I'm always coming back with her castoffs.

I can't take this tree into the back garden for fear that it will pass whatever it is on to my healthy ones. The top leaves have dropped off, I've wiped off more caterpillars and the little green bugs move like lightning and jump.

I'll give it another year in isolation. It's cute and a lovely shape.
