Had a look at that sticky but it's 6 years old. And I still don't really understand why we must wait for payment. Would it help if the buyer gave positive feedback on the day of collection?
To answer this specific question feedback is not always enough to get a payment released. PayPal often wait until tracking shows delivered so they know they as a company are safe ‘ish’ from chargebacks. However that will not be possible where you have no online tracking.

As you can see from Soolins post if you take PayPal for the £1000 sale it is possible you will lose the goods and the £1000.

This is taken from the Ebay website -

    Proof of collection

For proof of collection, you can use the eBay app to scan the QR code or manually enter the 6 digit code the buyer received after completing their purchase.

To scan the code, go to the Arrange Pickup screen on the eBay app and tap the Scan to confirm pickup button. The item will immediately be marked as delivered. You’ll still need to mark the item as paid if you collect cash at the time of delivery.

If the buyer doesn’t have their email with the codes, a signed receipt/invoice or an eBay message from the buyer confirming they collected the item can protect you against item not received cases.

It looks like the buyer can sign a receipt or message Ebay that they have collected. This sis the first I've heard about apps and six-digit codes? Is this the new normal with Ebay?

Yes, but what about a PayPal claim? EBay are bringing in new rules for their new managed payments when they ditch PayPal (rolling out supposedly from this month) but PayPal have not changed their requirements. EBay sometimes forget they no longer own PayPal and can not dictate the policy of an entirely different company.

Even on your cut and post it says ‘ The item will immediately be marked as delivered. You’ll still need to mark the item as paid if you collect cash at the time of delivery.’ so  there an assumption this is being paid in cash.

    I've not heard of this!

But that is eBay rules. Paypal require you to supply a tracking number if someone opens a dispute for item not received. No tracking, then buyer gets a full refund and they will also then have your item. Most buyers are honest, but there are some categories that attract scammers...

Mr Pinkshoes sells lots of large items that are not easy to post, so gets buyers to pay cash on collection. One even paid bank transfer on the day.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Had a long telephone conversation with Ebay this morning. The QR code and six-digit advice is fairly new, in fact the Ebay chap said they were having teething problems with it. In the meantime, he said get the buyer to give positive feedback whilst he is at your house. You can then check this within seconds, and shows the buyer collected and was satisfied. Both our buyers were very pleasant people, so we're not anticipating any problems.

And what did PayPal say when you asked them the same question? As above which I’m sure you have your reasons for ignoring, eBay and PayPal are 2 different companies.

If you don’t believe the PayPal FAQs and us how about Which

    https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/am-i-protected-when-selling-with-paypal#what-are-the-exceptions-to-paypal-protection

What are the exceptions to PayPal protection?

If any of the following apply, unfortunately you won’t qualify for protection if the buyer opens a dispute:

    • If you deliver an item in person or allow the buyer to collect it.
Incidentally scammers are usually the nicest people in the world, and I speak as someone who nearly lost a high street bank a lot of money many years ago. The nicest customers they were, I even made them a cup of tea whilst I sorted out an issue with their account and was just fetching the biscuits when the police arrived to arrest them. Luckily their charm had not worked on one of my colleagues who did a bit of digging into the account and realised we were being scammed. They were possibly some of the nicest customers I had dealt with.

Totally different though if they decide to dispute through PayPal.

Anyone can be nice in person.

soolin, I'm not ignoring the reality that Ebay and Paypal are two different companies, and if we'd known the scams nat can arise with Collection Only listings, we would have done something different.

I'm highlighting our experience in the hope it will help other sellers - people like me who don't sell very often and may not realise the pitfalls.

Thank you for that, it never hurts to have a robust discussion about common scams - there is a chance that another new seller may chance across this thread and have a timely warning.

The reality unfortunately is that new sellers rarely look for advice until it goes wrong, we get lots of threads in this sub board and on others where people have lost a great deal of money to a scammer, the difficulty is that to experienced sellers this is obvious but new sellers are rather guided by the whole ‘PayPal is brilliant and it’s safe and it’s easy’ adverts .

Yes the majority of buyers are honest , the sad fact though is that the few that are not often target people that they see as easy targets. I detest scammers and anyone who thinks they can steal from others so blatantly and that’s why I tend to come across strongly on threads like this. If just one person reads this and the sticky thread about the problems of collection only items and has a rethink then we have all achieved something.

Personally I have in the past taken PayPal and allowed a collection , once to someone who I knew was a local dealer and who needed some purchases to go through the books, and one to another dealer that I again knew and met at a particular auction and where I dropped his item off, both items were sub £15 and within my acceptable risk limit. Nowadays I do not sell anything at all collection only on eBay, all my collection items go on Facebook marketplace where I have a thriving trade.

Now if only we could make buyers understand the dangers of paying a stranger by bank transfer ..........
