Earning wage while on furlough

Hi

Was on webinar today and asked the following

Audience Question:

Q: Can a full time employed furloughed employee take on another fulltime job and receive that full time wage in addition to the government paying them 80% of their previous wage - meaning they are receiving much more money than prior to furlough?

A: If employees have more than one employer they can be furloughed for each job. Each job is separate, and the cap applies to each employer individually. Employees can be furloughed in one job and receive a furlough payment, but continue working for another employer and receive their normal wages.

Then I asked

Audience Question:

Q: Q: If an employee only has one job, is furloughed and receives 80% of their full time wage. Can they then go and work for a new employer after their furlough commenced and earn another full time wage while on full time furlough?

Q: If you are on full time furlough from the beginning and only have one employer and your employer is going to continue to furlough through to October, can the employee go out in July and get a new full time job while still being paid 80% of their furloughed employment. Note this employment did not commence until 1st July 2020

Not answered

Then I asked

Q: So can you confirm that the government will continue to pay this grant for someone getting 80% of a fulltime wage in addition to allowing the individual to start a new job and get a new full time wage, earning almost double than what they did previously with anew job from July through to October?

Suprise – no answer – so it looks like you can just go and get yourself another job and we will, as taxpayers, pay for their furlough

Yes people can go and get another job whilst on furlough.  The answer is pretty easy to find online so perhaps the speaker thought your question was more complicated than it was.

Some companies will have seen a HUGE increase in workloads where others have seen it drop completely, or need cover if people are off sick etc or cant work due to having caring responsibilities, so it does make sense to allow people who's work has been affected to then take a temp job up in an industry thats seeing a peak.  More income = more taxes paid and more spending money which comes back round via taxes.  Its also potentially lining a job up in case the worst happens.

I was under the impression that you can go get another job whilst furloughed, as long as it doesn't contradict your existing contract of employment with the business that;s furloughed you. So when I was furloughed, my contract states I won Monday to Friday 09:00 - 17:30. My understanding is that I can get another job outside of those hours & days.

Why are you raging? The system we live in is designed to help those in need ( doesn’t always work). Those people have paid taxes just like you and need support. Chances of losing your job being on furlough are very high too.

If people want to work too, that’s surely a positive, we can’t bemoan someone wanting to work and earn extra in the situation we are in.

No the hours of the second job don't matter as long as the worker is available to go back to work when required.  There might be something contractually about not being allowed to have a second job but if not people can fill their boots!

Another thing - they probably also allowed this in recognition of the impact on peoples health, mentally as well as physically, that not working can have.  Am currently seeing a friend of mine hover close to some sort of breakdown IMO due to not working, if it carries on they may well reach a point where they may be too ill to work ever again.

Guess what. The Self Employed can carry on working and claim a grant.

This is well known and documented all over the place

4 of my staff are furloughed and have got full time jobs in supermarkets the whole time they are furloughed. Although a lot of people are worse off from covid and lockdown, there are a lot of people who are financially gaining. Each to their own, and if you have the drive to go out and earn and work instead of sit on your todd at home all day while being paid 80% good on you.

What’s there to be raging about? Yeah 52 applied for jobs later I got another job while furloughed.

80% of a wage isn’t always realistic either if you’re seasonal and the figures used for furlough were from winter season when your bulk workload is summer. I wasn’t even paid properly either but that’s another matter.

I proved myself in the new Covid frontline position, worked very hard and was awarded with a permanent contract. It’s enabled me to finally get away from an Industry that I grew to hate and my original job position is now out there and free to go to someone else If they want it.

For the record furloughed workers were also tax payers who then paid tax on furlough payments and higher rate on their additional employment.
