Seller requesting phone number?

Had a message through amazon marketplace about an order asking for a phone number, saying the post office needs every parcel to have a phone number. I know some delivery companies text delivery updates but I've never experienced the post office requiring one for Royal Mail parcels and I try to avoid giving out my phone number. Is a phone number neccessary?

They will be using Royal Mail Tracked.
This will allow you to get text updates. Supply it or dont. your choice

I think you can give your mobile if you want to track where your parcel is via Hermes or the Amazon carrier.  Never noticed RM doing that?

I'm not sure if its a requirement. My phone number is linked to my Amazon account but it looks like Amazon don't automatically give it out to the seller when making an order on their marketplace. I've not had an amazon seller requesting a number before.

I’m an Amazon seller and all orders we receive have the customers phone number visible.  Amazon are very strict over the use of the numbers though and specifically state “This phone number is provided for shipping labels only”.

Thank you. I've never used Royal Mail Tracked for sending items so didn't realise the text updates were an option. Thanks

That's strange - I wonder why they have emailed asking for it. Should I be concerned by the email or is it possibly a problem with my account settings so my number isn't be passed on to sellers?

I don’t know if Amazon give buyers the option to block their phone number or not.  I’ve always been aware of the phone numbers on the orders but there may have been some in the past that didn’t have them (we rarely send by courier so mostly don’t need to use the numbers).

I’ve just had a look at today’s orders and can see the customers phone numbers on all of them.

Perhaps it’s a new and/or inexperienced seller who doesn’t realise your number is there?

When I got my first mobile phone, back in 1995, I also got a free follow-me-anywhere 07050 number which redirects to my mobile. It's very expensive to call it (070xx numbers are Premium Rate), so I just use it whenever I am forced to give a phone number but don't really want to.
