I am really scared

Hi
We had an accident on the slip road of the motorway yesterday. It was a rear end shunt and the front seat backs collapsed. If the children where in the back god knows the injuries they would have suffered as a result. I have never heard of this before and as I think that the car is a write off I am going to have to chose another car. How can I be sure if we were rear ended that this wouldn't happen again?
Anyone had this happen?
My stomach is really hurting today, muscular around my section scar.

Do you mean the rear seats collapsed?

If safety is your primary concern look for a car with 4* or 5* euro ncap rating

What car was it?, most cars perform differently on impact, If you looking for a replacement check out the NCAP star rating of the car your interested in, and that will give you more confidence that should the worst happen, you and your children have a fighting chance of surviving.

There was a crash test on filth gear recently a big old Volvo estate traditionally seen as a 'safe' car was pitted against a modern Renault Modus, and the Renault faired much better in the crash.

You will ache for a few days, its only natural, but if your concerned get yourself checked out by a medical professional.
  • no the seat backs of the front seats collapsed our car has a 4*ncap rating however as far as I can see ncap don't test for rear end shunt. Our car is a Renault Megane Scenic a family car that you would have thought would protect kids.
Anyone sitting in the back would have been injured, but as I say NCAP don't even test for rear end shunts and yet for a lot of front collisions there will be an equal and opposite rear end .

Have a look at Vovlo's testing...they're very solid so should be pretty safe.

BTW, have you been to A & E? Your insurance company will probably want to be informed about any injuries....
  • My OH is an A&E staff nurse - her advice would be : go see your GP, not your A&E department. GPs will be able to offer a continuing record of care plus you are not of immediate requirement of medical treatment

Book yourself in as an emergency at your GP - you'll wait an hour rather than 4 hours in A&E

There's too many people who go to A&E to validate future insurance claims
  • Friends of ours were rear ended at 80 miles per hour on a motorway collision a few years ago. They had hired a Vauxhall Zafira for the trip.
The boot crumpled, along with everything in it, but the children got out with only a nosebleed and some minor bruising. The doors were all opening normally indicating that the frame of the car had not been damaged.
The people who crashed into them were in intensive care for several days, after having their car cut open by the emergency services.

Once they got over the shock of everything, they bought themselves a Vauxhall Zafira at their main car.

<hugs> - Hope you feel better soon.

Why were you rear ended? Did you have to brake sharply or did driver behind not pay attention. I'd have thought an estate would be good for rear seat protection.
    Happy chappy

Anyone travelling east on the M20 just before the Hempstead Valley turn off, look out for the remains of a tyre you can see on the central reservation. It's ours!!!

I was in the back playing with baby in her seat when there was a sudden shuddering and the wife had to steer onto the hard shoulder, and we saw the offending tyre bouncing along the road, before coming to a stop in the middle. Luckily we were in the inside lane slowing to come off at the time.

We were rescued by an excellent RAC man, but like the OP, it certainly shakes you up.
    Been away for a while.
