Damaged parcel from MyHermes..but post claim by date

I ordered some goods online and arranged my own courier from MyHermes. Once the item arrived, I stored it in my garage and didn't open till post 14 days later. The parcel was damaged and so were the goods. They were not shipped like this and MyHermes claim as I have not informed them within 14 days, then I have no claim. Is there anything I can do?

The parcel was ripped (box tears) but wouldn't say it was damaged as such, but clearly the box had been thrown around, hence the number of dents on the item.

How do you know the parcel wasn't shipped like this?

If Hermes say you ned to claim within 14 days then you needed to claim within that time.

Are courier services excluded from the Consumer Rights Act?
Would limiting you to a 14 day period be considered an unfair limitation of your rights under the CRA?

Personally think its probably "lesson learnt" but always worth kicking the tyres on these things
