Returning license before new one arrives

I just renewed my license online and used my passport details so it seems I do not need a photo.It says I will get a new license in the post within 2 weeks subject to checks and that I should cut my old one in half and send it back to them. Will they wait to get my old one before sending the new one out? If not, should I…

Thanks for all the input. I applied online Thursday and it came yesterday with all the right details and using my passport photo.
I won't bother sending the old one back; it looks like there is no reason to. I'll just destroy it.
