Is this premium rate phone scam technically possible?

I read this on another forum. Someone calls you and for whatever reason, asks you to press on your phone key #1. This then connects you to a premium rate phone number and makes an unauthorised charge.

I thought that the caller always pays, and pressing Key #1 on your phone does not change the fact that they made the call. I can't get charged for a call I did not make, and press #1 does not mak a fresh call?

I suppose this is possible yes, i keep getting calls from an automated system claiming to be from amazon, apparently fraudsters have accessed my account and done some charges and to press one to speak to a member of their team. I would think most people know that these are scams and wouldn't fall for it. If they are claiming to be from a legitimate company always hang up and call the real customer service line.

I know that the caller may be bogus, and the person you speak to after pressing #1 will be bogus too. But can you get charged for a call that you did not make?

It’s not possible, if you receive an incoming call, pressing ‘1’ will have no effect on ‘your’ exchange connection, if ( for arguments sake ) you had three party calling, and while on a call, pressed ‘recall’ , got dialtone ( while the original call was on hold ) and you dial whatever number you want , you are billed for that, but that obviously is all under your control ( and I doubt many have 3 party calling  )
Its a just an urban myth that receiving a call and being conned into pressing a number somehow dials a premium rate number from your line , and that appears on your bill
  • It is totally possible that by pressing 1 you agree to an outbound call. That outbound call could be a premium rate number. Just hang up and use true caller .

Unfortunately the year hasn’t been spent getting acquainted with how phone systems work ,and still perpetuating urban myth as fact…it’s nonsense that pressing a digit on a phone keypad while on what was an incoming call can magically connect you to a premium rate number
