Auto renewal stops the situation where you have a house fire and aren't covered because you forgot - a lot more expensive than £50 for a small amount of time on cover.

Unfortunately the documentation will have made it clear that the policy was renewed but unpaid - I fear ignoring this is going to be a very expensive mistake going forward.
