Refund unused travel insurance policy?

Last January I purchased a single trip insurance policy for travel in April 2020. Due to Coronavirus, KLM cancelled the flight and the destination was in lockdown. Hence we didn't travel. I have requested a refund or voucher for the unused policy only to be told that I should have made a refund claim before the policy expired on 21/4/2020. So basically I have lost £140 on a policy I couldn't use. In April the flights situation was up in the air (sorry pun) so we didn't know what do do in terms of rebooking/cancelling etc. Do you think the travel insurance company should at least give me a voucher for a future trip or have I just lost the money?

You'll have had some benefit from the policy, in between January and April (in that they'd have covered costs if you'd had to cancel for health/bereavement reasons, etc) but obviously weren't in a position to use the actual travel component, so there's an argument that a partial refund would be in order.  I can understand why they'd say that this should have been initiated before expiry but what do the Ts & Cs of the policy say about cancelling it?
