Refund for unused UK Visitor Visa due to COVID.

I am a UK national working & living in Asia. My wife is a non-UK national and requires a (95 GBP) Standard Visitor visa to visit the UK. 

We were due to travel to the UK in April before all flights were cancelled and the UK closed its borders. Even though the visa is valid for 6 months, it is unlikely we can make the trip the year.

My question is whether we are entitled to a refund for the unused UK Visitor Visa?

Check your travel insurance.

They have done the checks and work necessary for issuing the visa so a refund is unlikely.

We lost £300 on our Russian visa, its just bad luck unfortunately

You were granted the Visa though. Do you expect everything to be done for free?

There is a lot of work done in granting a visa, it is not "just" a piece of paper.  That work has been done and cannot be "undone".
Did you not take out travel insurance?

Seems fair to me - you got the Visa. If you can use it or not is your issue, not theirs

 The UK border was never closed. Flights were in and out constantly.  Maybe the country you are in shut theirs but that's nothing to do with the Uk.
