Saga annual insurance renewal

We had travel insurance with Saga which expired a week ago ... they said we were not covered under that contract for covid cancellation on hols we booked pre-covid for Oct and November this year. I thought that we would be. But if so I wondered why bother renewing now, why not wait until a few months down the line before taking out new annual insurance? Most concerned about the Nov holiday, independently booked. Flights, accom etc to South Africa... who say they aren’t planning to let anyone in until Feb. I am still in the period where I could go back to saga and renew, or should/can I go elsewhere and be covered when the hols were booked in Jan? Thxx
