Notice of marriage

We are one of the many couples who have had there wedding postponed due to COVID-19. Our issue is notice of marriage. We have been informed that we will have to repay our notice of marriage again. But I have discovered that other districts and councils are not recharging some of their couples and are waving the fee. When I challenged our local registry office I was told we would have to pay again as it is a law full requirement but when providing evidence that I have of other  Councils we were told that we would have to wait on a decision. I have been waiting for nearly two months now. Unfortunately time is not on our side as my fiancé is in the Royal Navy and will be deployed soon and we will then be unable to attend to give give notice of marriage. Is anyone else experiencing this problem ?

I can only speak from my experience... we gave notice last October to marry in August 2020. We have now postponed to August 2021, and have not had to pay any more. We are with Torbay Council. Maybe it is down to each councils discretion?

    Hello,
I am in exactly the same position as the OP.  Gave Notice last year, was getting married in May 2020.  Cancelled wedding, notice ran out.  Now giving Notice on Monday 20th July for a Sept 2020 wedding (fingers crossed, it was always a small wedding so guest numbers aren't a problem for me) and having to pay Derby City Council another £70.00.   Ironically I'm getting married in Blackpool but live in Derby.  Blackpool Council or Lancashire Council are waiving fees for couples who had their wedding delayed due to Covid 19.  I strongly believe it is down to your local council whether they make you pay again or not.  I mean its not like the lady or man behind the desk does much in my opinion, to warrant paying £35 each in the first place.  You hand the forms over, she asks a few questions and sends all info. electronically over to whomever.  I wish I could make £70 that easily :D

Anyway, Best of Luck to all the future brides and grooms out there who had wedding delayed by Covid 19.  I wish you all a very happy Wedding Day :)
  • As time is of the essence, can you pay it so you can get married, but make it clear that you do not accept that it is a legitimate charge and that you want the review of the decision to continue and you want your money refunded eventually?
