Buying second car - how to insure? Will need to add learner driver soon/ new driver within the year.

We are about to buy a second family car. Our daughter turns 17 very soon and will learn to drive in this car (hopefully passing her test within the year). How do we go about insuring the car now? Just go for the best insurance deal for me and my husband at this time or insure it with a company that might give a good deal when she passes? Not sure how it works. If we do the former and the cost to add her (say, 8 months into the policy) is ridiculously high can we cancel or do we have to suck it up until renewal?

You can take out a policy now, just look to see how much the cancellation / amendment charges are.
You can hang on until your daughter gets her provisional, then go for the insurance. When she passed her test the insurance will go up as she will be a higher risk due to just passing her test.
Will she be having the car after she has passed? If so, hang on until she gets her licence, put the car in her name.
Insurance policy in either yours or your OHs name, with the other plus daughter as named driver while learning to drive.
OR
Policy in daughters name with one or both of you as named driver.
Pass test then new policy in her name with one or both of you as named driver(s).Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0 -
Presumably one of you have some no claim discount already built up on a second vehicle or it could be expensive. I would go for the best deal now and see how much it is when she passes. It might be quick (months) or might take some time (a year +). After the say 8 months, the additional premium will only be over the remaining 4 months so may not be too bad. If it is extortionate, you are free to cancel and move but you will pay a cancellation fee and lose any no claim bonus built up over the 8 months.
It doesn't matter who the registered keeper or the policyholder is, but you MUST declare who the main driver is(the one who uses the car the most). If it's your daughter and you dont declare it, that's fronting and illegal, and something insurance companies particularly look out for.0
