HSBC 2nd hard credit check for one application

So, my wife applied for a credit card with HSBC early May, and we both had hard credit checks conducted (fine). After hearing nothing, she rang up at the end of June to check the status. Whilst she was on the phone I received a notification that HSBC credit cards had carried out another check. This is the same for my wife. On the phone, the agent said we could ring up and get that removed as it shouldn't have happened. HSBC customer service, after hours and hours have now moved things on to the complaints department, after repeatedly saying they can't see any details of the 2nd check, and that we should contact our credit reporting agencies. However, we have separate agencies, so in essence they are suggesting that 2 separate agencies magicked identical checks out of thin air on that particular day. We don't want the multiple checks on our records because we are in the process of applying for a mortgage, and their complaints resolution time of 6 - 8 weeks is unacceptable to us given we want to get on with buying a house. Also, as far as my research tells me, carrying out the second check without permission would register as illegal. Any advice on what we can do to not wait 6-8 weeks for a resolution would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The check isn't illegal, so don't worry about that.
Lenders often check more than one CRA,
A couple of searches will cause you no problems with your house buying.2 -
I know some people on here get quite obsessed with it, but personally I wouldn't worry about it, and certainly wouldn't spend much time trying to get it removed. In my experience searches have very limited impact on the ability to get credit.2
