Will they close account after full payment?

So I've had a Vanquis card with a limit of £500 for a few years now and I've not maintained the best history with it. Most of the time the card has been maxed out and more than a few times it's gone over the limit/missed payments etc.
Basically I've come into some money and also been promoted at work so financial situation has gone from stable to comfortable and I want to sort out my credit file status! And I know one of the best ways is by using and paying off credit card !!!IN FULL!!! My worry (and my question) is though that if I now pay off the full balance, because of my history will they say to themselves "Right he's paid it all of, quick let's close the account before he max's it out again!"? Or does that kind of thing not happen?
It sounds stupid but I've paid most of it but left a balance of £35 just incase.

Thanks, hope that all makes sense!

    Maybe. Maybe not.

But keeping a balance on it purely to keep it open is mad.

Depends how they service that balance. If the balance was £35 yesterday, they then buy something for £35 today, and then pay £35 off tomorrow, it is a full balance payment each month and no interest is being accrued.
  • Thanks for your replies. Just to clarify, my credit limit is £500 and I had £0 available. Yesterday I paid £465 but I was scared to pay the remaining £35 incase they close my account now that they'd have all their money back. But in hindsight I can see the madness in it..I will pay the remaining £35 and if they close the account then so be it.
    Thanks again
  • Do you still have a physical card in date on the account?
If you do there is less chance they will close it straightaway - keep an eye out for the renewal date to see if you get a new one.

Yes I actually received a new card last week as the old one expired. As above, I'll just pay the rest and hope for the best/see what happens.

    Thanks again

Vanquis are unlikely to cancel your card when it is fully paid up to date unless you have been notified that they are unhappy with the way you have conducted the account.Use it lightly in future, paying full balance each month and it shouldn't be long before your limit is increased.

As above, if your new financial position allows I suggest you clear the balance each month.

  • If they didn't want you as a customer they would have closed your account already.

Remember to check your next statement. There will be some residual interest to pay.

I doubt they will close it. You are/were their ideal customer, paying them interest and charges. With a limit of only £500 they aren't risking a great deal.
