Qantas flights operated by Emirates

Back in December 2019 we booked with Qantas to fly to Australia at the end of October 2020. We planned a 4 day stopover in Dubai and the flights London to Dubai and then Dubai to Sydney are operated by Emirates. Due to the Australian border closure we anticipate that Qantas will have to cancel their flights, I.e. our return flights, but what about the ones operated by Emirates? Anyone have any advice on this? We may have the option to defer the whole lot but would prefer a refund if possible.

If the Dubai borders open and you are allowed to enter then your flights there and back are unlikely to get cancelled.
They "may" allow you to move the flights but are under no obligation to refund on a flight that is not cancelledEx forum ambassador

If you booked through Qantas as a package then cancellation of one flight might be considered as cancelling the lot. Ask Qantas: your contract is with them, not Emirates.
Did you book the hotels through them at the same time, if so do you have an ATOL certificate? No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thanks for your responses. We don't have a return flight booked from Dubai as we were returning via Singapore. First trip overseas for about 30 years and so we are a bit in the dark about all of this. I haven't contacted Qantas yet but I hope they will accept that the whole package of flights was booked with them;they were all booked at the same time on one payment. Re hotels, we booked via Qantas but the Dubai hotel is cancellable right up to October so should be OK for a refund.0

Do you have an ATOL certificate? If you do, and it says 'package', then you can claim one refund covering everything. Forget Emirates and the hotels, your contract is with Qantas, they decide whether to refund you, not their 3rd party providers. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Hold tight and see what Qantas come up with about 4 weeks before travel.
As has been said the whole journey is with Qantas
I would hope they give you an option to defer and you could do so for a more suitable time in the future.
They treated me fairly when we went to Aus in March this year and then had to come home early.1
