Which legal helpline

Options
My sister and I are in the process of executing my late fathers will and have just started on the pile of forms.  It’s not complicated as such but lots of forms due to various investments, gifts and my late mums claim of NRB and RNRB so we are a little daunted at this stage.

i mentioned to my sister about signing up for which legal helpline as it seems good value and in all fairness will probably just be to check a couple of points but have read really bad reviews on trustpilot.  Does anyone have any experience of using them or other recommendation? we don’t want a solicitor to manage the process maybe just to answer a couple of queries, thank you

Sorry, although we're members of Which?, we haven't ever used their Legal Helpline. I wouldn't rely on Trustpilot reviews for that - or anything else!

Lots of knowledgeable & helpful people on here with recent experience of Probate process.

Have a read of MSE guide,

  • I am the executor to my wife's late uncles estate and have just finished administering his estate. I was quoted £18k by a solicitor to apply for probate for his estate!  I did it myself and used the excellent Which legal service twice during the process and would highly recommend it. Total cost for using this service was less than £100

That's useful info, thanks. If its not too intrusive, could you say what those 2 issues were?

Don't forget the HMRC helpline https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/probate-and-inheritance-tax-enquiries. I see they've now added a webchat facility. I rang them multiple times with queries while filling out the forms (IHT400  plus several others), and they always answered quite quickly and were very helpful. I've rung then once since Covid lockdown, and was pleasantly surprised that they were able to answer within about 5 minutes.
