Incorrect National Insurance number

I have just discovered that a pension provider from previous employment has had the wrong NI number for me since the pension was opened. It's now been corrected but are there any implications going back or going forwards? Thanks.

I would check your state pension record to make sure you have contributions for those years.
I actually have had two NI numbers, the original one was issued to two people. It took years to be resolve as HMRC kept on trying to refuse my company NI contributions.
It took an in-depth interview and then they made sure all my previous NI contributions were credited to my new NI account.0 -

If the error goes back to the days when you were contracted out (if you were contracted out) then it could be an issue. However, if its just down to personal contributions made then no problems.

Thanks for the replies. So not sure if this is relevant but it was with Scottish Widows and i was meant to be contracted out but received a letter in 2014 (i think) saying they had made an error and not contracted me out (this error happened to many SW customers). So is that better or worse? I don't really understand all the rules and whether i need to ask SW to correct their mistake or whether it makes no material difference.0

If they didn't correct it (& refund you some money) then you have paid full NI. This could mean that you have paid into SERPS or SP2 which will give you payments towards New state pension rather than basic state pension & the difference could be around £40 per week more. How much depends on your actual NI record which hopefully you should be able to see at some point.

Through a screw up by HMRC I had two Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) numbers at one time! Not so unique in my case.1
