Exchanging contracts - TR1, deeds, etc - need a witness - FIL okay?

Hi,
We need a witness to us signing the various documents for exchanging contracts to purchase a house - does anyone know if a Father in Law is acceptable?

You really ought to be asking your solicitor - after all, it’s what you’re paying them for!
When I got my docs witnessed, the solicitor sent a list of the types of people who could witness. My boss signed for me. I do remember it said not immediate family, so might be ok, but best check with solicitor.
If you will the end, you must will the means.

Yes, assuming he's not otherwise involved in the transaction.

Great. Thank you. I notice that it asks ti complete 'profession' next to the witness name, my FIL delivers medicines....due to the lack of listed professions, I assume that this will be okay?

The witness in this case does not have to come from one of a specific list of professions

It just means what his job title (if any) is. Tinker, tailor, soldier, retired...

I thought family were not permitted to sign as witness, certainly our solicitor said this in their correspondence. Our neighbour signed ours.

Best to avoid other members of your own household, or people otherwise involved somehow, but there's no general "no family" rule.
