He is worried sick as only driving since late January. The police let him drive home and said he would get a letter, can anyone advise what to expect? The car is in my name.

If the vehicle is in your name then surely it's your responsibility to check the paperwork etc and surely it is YOU that will receive the letter ?

You can check expiry dates for mot and tax etc on the online DVLA website , so never accept what you are told

Ask the forum admin to move this thread to the motoring foum

Wrong sub-forum, I'm sorry. We deal with private parking tickets. Please go to the 'Go To Category' drop-down box (top r/h corner of this page) and select the 'Motoring' forum. Copy and paste your above post there. Good luck.
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

Always check the paperwork and write down the important dates for MoT and Tax etcetera. You can even sign up to the DVLA reminder service for both of these.
Many garages have been operating throughout the pandemic, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get an MoT test done fairly soon.

check the vehicle tax and MOT status ( and expiry dates) here: https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/
You/He is extremely lucky the police let him drive home, and even more lucky in that they didnt look into the insurance details, as a majority of insurance policy's will not be valid for driving a vehicle with no MOT.
You could have seen your son getting 8 points on his licence meaning a loss of driving licence and a re-test being required ( coupled with extremely high insurance premiums) a large fine and loss of the vehicle
If your son is using the car to deliver goods ( ie food delivery/amazon/courier etc) the vehicle will require business level insurance as opposed to the usual  level of insurance (SDL&P)  Leicestershire police ( near to where i am currently holed up) have been pulling food delivery drivers recently for no business insurance, towing the vehicles with drivers getting points+penalty's.

It's the usual trick. Gareg asays it has a MOT you think it means new MOT.

It's even worese with some official ticked garages. As they give you their !!!!!! free mot for life crap when all you really want ias a new mopt cause you are not going back.

However not noticing of checking online when you have purchased it ridiculous. And yes I have seen people do that.

  • Thanks, the policy is in my name, he is the main driver on the policy, and only commuting to Tesco for work so no issues there. If  fixed penalty is the way then I guess thats a lesson learnt.

    Insurance is irrelevant.

If they issue a fixed penalty it is likely to be £100 fine and that's it, lesson learned no points he has been lucky, now needs to get on board with all the responsibilities, costs and red tape involved in motoring.
Also get up to speed with all the pit falls of parking which is probably more confusing than all the other car ownership issues.
