So I've just been on to the Post Office travel insurance - even though I purchased travel insurance back in January (standard package) - we would not be covered for any Covid related incidents because we did not select 'Natural catastrophe' add-on in the insurance.
I was under the impression that because we had booked it so long ago that we would be ok??

Have you read through the policy documents yourself? Can you see anything that would specifically provide or exclude cover?
Post any clauses that think may be relevant here, and people maybe able to advice.

Natural Catastrophe - Pandemic as declared by the
World Health Organisation, volcanic activity, volcanic
ash, earthquake, tsunami, hurricane, cyclone, flooding of
    more than 50 square km.

Above is their definition of natural catastrophe - so obvs this covers covid. We're not covered because this was an 'add-on' which I did not purchase.

According to Martin Lewis last night - if you purchased TI before March you're sorted - at least that's the message I got.

You may be correct, but you have only posted the definition of natural catastrophe, not any clauses which may provide or exclude cover. Impossible to tell for sure what cover you may have based upon what you have posted.
Are you looking to book a new trip and wondering whether you are covered? Or do you already have a trip booked, and when was it booked? Also, make sure that you are reading the version of the policy document which was in force when you bought the policy.

Unfortunately your impression is wrong - just because cover was taken out before doesn’t mean it covers Covid.

I have a long-running cheap insurance policy mainly just for the medical aspect - and even though 3 years old pandemics are excluded too.

Yeah I think I'm gonna go with TrailFinders. They seem to offer Covid cover.

You may wish to have a look at my comment on another thread. Make sure you check through the cover details.

We too bought insurance from the Post Office. I couldn’t believe that we wern’t covered for anything Covid related until I read all the small print. I then found lots of reviews online giving the Post Office only 1 star for their cover. We’ll look somewhere else next time.

Does no one actually check what’s covered before clicking the magic ‘pay’ button?

In choosing their top range option, yes I thought we had a good level of cover.  Going off the tick sheet that compares their levels of cover we had great coverage. It’s not until you receive the insurance and have to read the small print about pandemics that you find it’s not included.
