Liability when working at heights

I need to get slates replaced on the roof of my 2-storey house. I've had two quotes - No.1 states scaffolding will be put up and No.2 will manage with just ladders. Quote No.2 is half the price of No.1 so I intend to go for the cheaper. I am assuming that if anything happens to the slater whilst up a ladder on my property that there is no liability on me?

This is fairly straightforward to answer.

Ask the roofer if he has liability insurance. If not then don't hire him.

However, even with his insurance, if neglegence can be proved against you then your household insurance will cover you providing you have the right cover from your insurers.

Check to see what your covered for with your insurers.

just to add to robowen's advice.

Ask to actually see his liability insurance certificate , if he has one , he should be more than happy to show it you , if he just tells you he has one but doesn't provide proof then you could still be considered liable
