She needs to either apply for Housing Benefit (if she is claiming or eligible for the severe disability premium) or Universal Credit. Do you know why she hasn't claimed for any help with rent so far?

Edit: though she would only be entitled to the one bedroom rate of help with housing costs or a one-bedroom social property so it sounds like she will probably have to move anyway.
Not if she can find a way to top up the rent herself, or get discretionary housing benefit.
To get a DHP you need to already be getting Housing Benefit or Housing element of UC.
That’s not strictly true (at least not at my council!) however no ones going to get it because they bought a house and couldn’t afford the mortgage from day one.

    That's interesting - I was going by guidance on gov.uk https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/claiming-discretionary-housing-payments/claiming-discretionary-housing-payments

Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

I was referring to the mum being able to stay in her current property if she is only entitled to a one bedroom rate, on the presumption that she'd have to start claiming HB/UC when dad stopped paying the rent.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I feel my council talks as it walks sometimes. I know they had a lot of surplus money at the end so wanted it spent so that their next budget wasn’t cut...
