Great website Albermarle, which I feel I really should have discovered before now, so thanks.
HSBC Global Strategy funds seem to be better weighted than Vanguard LS.
BTw if you do go for vanguard don't pick the life strategy funds, I believe they are compromised by the artificial "UK" element. (Which isn't really UK just large companies that arbitrarily are domiciled here)   Vanguard have other similar funds which aren't affected by that as do many other companies and you can always ways pick one with a bond element as well

Some people still use it but many, including myself, believe it is no longer ideal in the modern world.  HYP usually involve home bias and UK large cap.   UK large cap is consistently a poor performer (that could change but it hasnt in the last 25 years and no-one really expects it to as UK companies are too focused on dividends and not growth).   Plus, you cannot control you risk as well as total return without compromising the portfolio.
Sounds like my thinking is dated with HYP so I've just dipped my toes in with an HSBC All-World Index tracker having been swayed to stop pretending I can beat the market with my own stock picks (though I do enjoy a small flutter from time to time).
Whether or not I'll sell up the BTL and drip feed the proceeds into the tracker, or something else, I'm not yet sure.  The capital appreciation is good so, failing a market crash in Edinburgh, I have the luxury of time.
    Thanks again for your feedback.

Nothing to do with anti UK sentiment, everything to do with actual returns over the long term. Investing decisions should not be based on sentiment.

It’s worth looking at possible returns on property when you sell compared to stocks and shares. My house has grown in value over the last ten years much less than my other investments. Of course that tells us nothing about future growth, but the massive growth seen 20 years ago is perhaps unusual. Platforms such as AJ Bell YouInvest have search tools that allow you to see the returns and volatility for each sector and market eg small caps UK, mid caps Europe, big caps US, tech stocks, etc. That is how I made my investment decisions, and although I am underweight in US stocks, it has turned out pretty well. I avoided property on the basis that it required too much hard work. However, I could have made a killing many years ago.

With stocks and shares you get tax shelters. If you invest a large sum, you can each year transfer ~£20,000 into an ISA tax wrapper. And of course if you work you can take advantage of the pension tax breaks, but don’t forget that you will be taxed when you take the pension, so the savings might not be so good depending on your current pension pot value.

It's strange how people still want to live here yet are desperate to get all their money out.

This is just tcallaghan93 / respectmymonah / album_song /contr_arian 's distaste, as seen on other previous threads, for the view that you should allocate your money very internationally for diversification when he personally prefers to invest with a stronger home bias - due to his view that the prospective returns from a combination of FTSE100 and 250 will outshine those of a more international index including the S&P et al, despite missing certain sectors whose values have grown well, as those sectors are not destined to grow well forever.  Probably no need to get into the back-and-forth on it on this thread too
