I know this is a stupid question but when you get an e-mail how do you get rid of it without opening it, if the envelope is yellow does that mean it's not opened (can people get your details this way or do you have to click on a link) if i can see the message on my screen does that mean i've opened it ?

You shouldn't use the preview pane as a default view for security reasons, ie a window in the bottom right undeneath your mail listing
You can simply right click the unopened mail in the and click delete0 -
Why shouldn't you use the preview pane? I always do and 'touch wood' have never had a problem. Can you explain further please?:eek:0

I thought the security issues with the previous pane had been fixed by a number of patches over the years. (I use it too and always have done).Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

Just select the message in the Inbox and hit delete. (Or get Mailwasher and delete it at the server, before you download it).
What email program are you using?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

I use windows mail, when i get messages in my junk mail, my phishing message comes up, what's the best way if your doing lots of competitions, you don't have to put every address in your safe senders list do you.? i feel silly for asking such basic questions0

Read this, it's easier than me typing it. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

"The Preview Pane option actually opens the email you click on immeidately, running whatever nasty scripts are contained within it!
This is VERY dangerous because many of today's email viruses will run when the email is opened without you double-clicking on an attachment or anything... it just runs when the email is opened!"
I use Mailwasher, so delete all spam and everything from an unknown sender. And have AV. And all MS patches installled.
I know this does not mean 100% protection - but I reckon the risk to me is less than 1%.
Others need to make their own judgements, of course.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

Before you delete an email, I suggest that you right click the "Zone Alarm" (if you have it) firewall icon in the taskbar, and click on either "engage internet lock, or stop all internet activity. You can do the same again to return to normal.
This is because I had an email try to dial out, and I had only highlighted it to delete.0 -
 I think that i've followed your advice properly and disabled the preview pane, now i just see a heading in inbox , junk etc and have to double click to open the message, if i don't want to open it it's just one clikck on it and then delete, i've had my windows vista a few months and never realised , it's always been like that.0
