Retention of Private Plate
I bought my company car when I retired. The registration plate is on a V778 with the company named as the Grantee but I am the registered keeper on the V5C. The company agreed the plate moved with the car.
When I come to sell the car how do I transfer the plate if the ex owner (my company) is on the V778 ?

You can't have a 'plate on a car AND on a V778, it is either or.The grantee assigned the 'plate to the vehicle registered in your name, and it cancels their V778. You now have the right to use the 'plate, and you get a V778 in your name when you pay the retention fee and take it off your vehicle.

Thanks for that but I didn’t word it very well. The plate is on a car which I am the registered owner of.Can I put that plate on retention without the V750 ?0

Yes, the V750 was cancelled when the plate was first assigned to a vehicle, same with the V778.

Brilliant , thanks for that. One last stupid question ! The plate was on the car when my company owned it and their name was on the V5C. They sold me the car with the plate on and I am now the registered keeper on the V5C.So I can put the plate on retention as my name is on the V5C ?0

Yes, they sold it to you with the 'plate on, they gave up their right to use the plate by not taking it off BEFORE they sold it.You must retain the 'plate (online is quickest) and get the V778 before you sell it- whilst the V5 is in your name.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

A plate is a plate is a plate. Doesn't matter if it was moved onto a car or issued new by DVLA. So long as it doesn't say "non-transferable" on the V5C, you can shift it off if you want.
If you have a current V5C with that reg on and your name on, that is your reg. If you want to check if a V5C is current, go to https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ - if the plate takes you to the vehicle, it's the one that's currently on it. If you go to the bottom and "view tax rates", you can check the doc ref of the doc itself is the current one, the only one DVLA recognises.
All the other forms were just involved in the moving between cars last time the plate was shifted, and have been superceded by the issue of that current V5C.0 -
