Inheritance tax - how long will they take!!!!!

Following my Grandmothers passing I sent off all the inheritance tax details and forms to the tax office via our solicitor, back in January and am still waiting for a reply of any sort???
Is this normal?? Should we not at least have had some form of receipt. Our solicitor does not seem overly worried but i am totally frustrated by it all.

    Details??
My Grandmother died leaving a will, her estate is worth more than the cut off for Inheritance tax so we attained valuations, filled in the forms, got our solicitor to go through them and send them off.

What do you mean by details??

Since posting I have mentioned this to a work collgue who lost his mother recentl(a year ago) and his took 11 months so may be this is normal.... if it is its a terrible state of affairs. Lives in limbo whilst waiting for HMRC to reply!

We've been waiting for over two years for them to sort out my FIL's estate. It went over the threshold and as been in probate for some time now. Our hands are tied until we know exactly how much needs paying.

It would seem to me that if you gave a little more detail of your situation you might find there are people here with specific relevant experiences that could help you.

by details I meant things like:

-when you say sent off to the HMRC do you mean you have already obtained the stamped D18 and been to the Probate Office to make the declaration?

or do you mean that you have paid them and are awaiting probate

or do you mean that there is a dispute about valuations etc

-is the estate particularly complicated i.e. agricultoral lands, property, trusts

-why are you using a solicitor

    - what do the HMRC say when you have phoned to ask about the delay in replying.

my own experience of dealing with a straight forward family situation (no will but that seemed to make no difference) was something like this

    a. took about 3 months to gather all the valuations, outstanding bills etc etc
    b. sent D18 etc to probate office.. they took 3 weeks to arrange the interview and a further week to return the stamped D18.
    c. sent HMRC the stamped D18 and IHT200 pack and they took about 2 weeks to send the IHT bill.
d it took me 2 weeks to arrangement payment
    e. HMRC took a couple of weeks to sent me probate

so in total about 6 months
but I monitored every thing continually, phoned up asking if they had received things and were there any problems etc.

Other people I know have found it takes a bit longer expecially if there are problems about valuations but it may be that your situation is complicated.

My experience is similar to CLAPTONs. About 2 weeks from sending IHT 200 to receiving the IHT bill and I did use a solicitor.

Worried now....... sent IHT200 off last January and solicitor (who is also a family friend) has heard nothing?????? He says he has chased it?????

All we have done is gained valuations, bills etc etc and sent IHT200 via solicitor to the tax office.

Having never been in this situation before and having no idea of what to do i sought this solicitor friends help.

  • Not too sure if this is the right section, but here goes. About 4 years ago my husband & I sold our property and went to, live my with mother to look after her. The house we moved too was owned outright by my mother who was a widow. It was in a very bad state and we used all the money made on our house and more to do up the property, this therefore as put a lot on value on the house. At the time it was agreed with my mother that a transfer would be made to change to beneficial joint tenants, therefore that on the death of one,the property passes to the survivor. This was done and sent to HM Land Registry. My mother passed away about 2 months ago without leaving a will.
My mother had quite a few children and it was agreed at the time of the transfer, that we would not be party to any money that she left, which is quite considerable. Would we be liable to inheritance tax on the house if over £300.000?
Also would they base the value of the house at the time of the transfer or at the current market value.

I would welcome any comments on this.

    Many thanks
