Hello I am an Expat living short term in Spain. I would like to invest in shares etc in uk. Is it legal as I am not uk tax registered at present?

Yes, it is very common for people to own shares in countries other than where they are resident.
In fact, this is recommended, as it helps to manage risk. It's a good idea to put your money into a balanced portfolio (such as HSBC All Share).
You might have to pay income tax or capital gains tax (or local equivalent) in Spain, where you are resident, on dividends you receive on the shares or profit you make when you sell them.0 -
How short term is short term? You won't "officially" be non-resident until you've satisfied the criteria across a full tax year.0
