Claim for MacBook

Options
Hi all. My son has just finished a film production course at uni on a 2017 MacBook Pro. Due to lockdown he’s had to upload huge amounts of software to complete the course and it’s been in use constantly. He now has a screen problem called image persistence where several tabs open at once and it’s difficult to see. He’s taken it to a verified Apple repair company as Apple aren’t taking in products to repair or assess. It’ll be £470 to repair. For a 3 year old computer it seems pointless if he can buy a new MacBook Air with a year’s warranty for just short of a £1000. Would the insurance only pay for a repair? Really I’d prefer to pay the excess and invest in a new one. I’ve had insurance with One Call for 15 years and never claimed. Thanks in advance.

Do the T&C's of your insurance say they cover faulty / overworked IT equipment or is it only theft / loss / accidental damage they cover?

Home insurance doesn't normally pay out in these circumstances and I'm guessing your son didn't have any extended insurance.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.
  • Thanks for that, I’ll check that out as it does seem to be an Apple problem. Ju

Try the following which is taken from Apples help site.

If you see a persistent image on your screen, you can use the screen saver to eliminate it:

    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences, and then click Desktop & Screen Saver.
    2. Click the Screen Saver tab.
    3. Choose the screen saver you'd like to use.
    4. Use the menu next to "Start after" to select an interval shorter than the interval you set for display sleep and computer sleep in the Energy Saver section of System Preferences.
    5. To clear the persistent image, allow the screen saver to run for approximately as long as the image was displayed.
  • This is a known problem with certain screens made by LG that Apple used. It's a manufacturing defect, it's covered by the Consumer Rights Act. You need to contact Apple and ask to have the screen replaced for free as legally obligated, or a substantial refund (at least 50%) on the price you paid for the laptop.
