How to set custom ringtone on Motorola G7 Power?

Can somebody please help an oldie out?  I've downloaded a ringtone I'd like to use on my G7 Power but I can't work out how to actually set it.  When I go Settings > Sound > Phone Ringtone and tap "Add ringtone", that takes me to a page headed "Download" on which the new ringtone is shown as a 465kB file.  If I tap on that, it takes me back to the "Phone ringtone" list.  If instead I tap and hold on the file, the file icon changes from white to light blue and it says "1 selected" at the top of the page, together with "open".  If i tap on "open", it takes me back to the "Phone ringtone" list again, and it's driving me nuts.

In a word - help!
