Comparison sites

Hi all, here's a situation that I've encountered twice recently. In both cases (Home and car insurance) I've made full use of all comparison sites and fiddled with stuff like excesses, type of cover including a few "what if" scenarios to see how they affected my premiums. I finally found good quotes for both car and home insurance and paid for both on line. Now the strange bit...both insurers emailed after a week or so querying the details on my proposal as they said " the details do not agree with details you entered on a comparison site, if you give false information you insurance my be void etc. etc."  I thought the whole idea of comparison sites were so you could change things around a bit...e.g. if you call a room a bedroom or a study, does it make a difference?. Or what if I fitted an expensive music system to my car? (I didn't, but you get the gist). It seems the insurance companies spy on anything you put into a comparison site and could possibly use it to challenge a claim later. Anyone else come across this?

It's no secret.  It's why you should use dummy details until you're ready to buy.

Changing details flags you up as at best trying to game the system, at worst making a fraudulent declaration.

What kind of details did you change?  Excesses wouldn't flag you up.

I thought the whole idea of comparison sites was to compare quotes from different providers
  • Interesting, I didn't know that. Nothing sinister on my part, just idle curiosity while bored during lockdown to see what things made a difference. Some ask for number of bedrooms, some bathrooms, some total rooms so I played about with the numbers.

There's one thing seeing if a higher voluntary excess, legal cover, accidental damage makes a difference, a totally different ballgame to mess with the rooms and I'm not surprised you got flagged.
