Wedding dress deposit return rights - please help!

Options
Hi, wondering if anyone can help. We were due to get married this June, and I had paid a £200 deposit on a dress. However, due to COVID19 we've both lost our jobs, and also suffered a bereavement. As such, we've decided to entirely cancel our wedding. But the wedding dress shop won't give me my deposit back. No alterations have been made, I haven't even got the dress in my possession, I've simply tried it on in the shop. They could still sell it on to someone, it doesn't make any difference to them. Do I have any rights or a leg to stand on (having signed some terms and conditions)? Thanks.

  • read the t & C and that will confirm how to proceed. if the deposit is non refundable then you are stuck (which if it was my shop it would be)
  • No you do not, it was a deposit, the fact that you have chosen not to continue the purchase of the goods means that you lose the deposit, that is how these things work.
  • I would imagine the dress you tried on was a sample and that 'your' dress was on order.
If that's the case then I would imagine the shop has had to pay a deposit and hence they will have lost that deposit (if that makes sense).
The other alternative is for you to purchase the dress in full, and only make alterations for when you eventually get married.

Dress deposits are usually non refundable mainly because they are made to order.

The COVID situation doesn’t change your terms and conditions with the dress supplier, it’s the same as any other cancellation.
