Car insurance by mile?

Hi
Has anyone got car insurance by mile? It works out an estimated £200 cheaper than my current one, just wondered if anyone has experience with this?
thanks

I assume you mean "black box" insurance.
It seems to be very common for younger drivers.

I'm presuming you mean the company By Miles. I haven't used them but it seems straight forward enough and the majority of reviews are positive.

I tried it for my car, 6000 miles pa and it was half as much again as I currently pay. I would worry if circumstances changed and pushed my mileage up.
  • Thank you - it's not actually black box as they don't calculate insurance based on how you drive only how many miles you do.
It works out SO much cheaper - of course if mileage stays the same.

This is starting to sound a bit spammy.

There's no black box to measure driving style but there is a box that plugs in to the OBD port to measure mileage.

It's not SO much cheaper at all. The 'parked' charge is only £9 cheaper than my existing policy. At 3.2p a mile on top, at 6000 miles it's  almost double my existing policy.

If you're annual mileage is very low then by all means get a quote, but consider what will happen if your circumstances change part way through the year.

I have been with them since November and all has been well.
I paid £200 pa fully comp and protected NCD.
I have not paid anymore yet due to having a £50 referral credit on my account and also COVID19.
I have a £50 referral credit link in the referrals board that if you click my link and buy from ByMiles we both get £50 credit on our accounts.
You can of course use anybody's referral code if you want to.

So on one of my cars I pay £250/year for up to 10,000 miles.... how many miles would I get for £250 on this sort of policy then?

Apparently I have 'nice wheels' but they won't quote for me

RS65 what a nice problem to have! Nice wheels. :)

I joined up with ByMiles a week ago. So far so good. The OBD plug came within 4 days. Customer service on the phone had a 20 mins wait, but the online chat was fairly instant. I'm a single woman of a certain age and ByMiles CS talked me through how to take off the panel in the car to access the OBD socket.  Plugged it in and the plug started flashing green.  Within 10 mins, I downloaded the app and it automatically connected my login with the OBD. Now I can 'Find My Car' and run an OBD diagnostic for free.

I did around 3k miles last year with grocery runs/visiting friends, probably less this year with Covid 19.  So ByMiles works out a lot cheaper for me. The next lowest renewal/fresh quotes came in at around £300.  I'm paying £174 fixed element and I shan't think my mileage this year would go above the MSE credit.  But the premise is you pay on a monthly basis, based on the actual miles driven that month.

BTW the MSE £55 credit runs out on 31 July 2020.  So if this type of car insurance works for you and you're within a month of renewal I'd say go for it!

If you're not looking to renew your insurance until after 31 July, PM me for a referral link to get £50 ByMiles credit (I also get credit, but since I don't drive an awful lot I just want to help others).
