Family holiday nightmare

Hi, thank you for letting me post, I wanted to ask why Ryan Air have cancelled my son and his family's flight and offered him a refund, yet my daughter and her family who were traveling on the same day same flight, ( only difference was they were flying back one hours different) has not been offered a refund.  Can Ryan Air do this, offer some people and not others a refund?

Yes, sounds like they have merged 2 flights and some people had to be given the chop. If all had been on the same booking it would not have happened.

Was the refund perhaps driven by cancellation of the return flights rather than the outbound ones, i.e. your son's return flight is cancelled but your daughter's isn't?

Also interested to know which route Ryanair operate with only one hour between scheduled departures.

As I didn't book the flights I am not sure about why there was a an hour time difference, they both booked separately 2 adults and two children Rome Champino from Stanstead on the 26th of July. My Son who received a cancellation email had booked for the early morning flight return and my daughter had booked a later morning flight return, but both were going on the same day, this was meant to be a holiday for us all, I am on the shielding list for COVID 19 therefore cannot go, so that leaves my daughter and two children, ( her husband cant go as he has just started work and therefore is not chancing going on holiday as he fears he may loose his job) losing out on not only the cost of a flight but car hire bookings.

Were they definitely different flight numbers? 
If you are prevented from travel by the shielding restrictions, then your travel insurance should apply.

 So which flight has been cancelled - the out bound from Stanstead or the return from Rome? You only mention the return flights, which are different flights.
If your son's return flight has been cancelled then his outbound will be cancelled as he can't return. That  doesn't affect your daughter if her later return flight is still operating.
