I wouldn't do absolutely anything if I were you. Not your fault at all, let them fix it. I wouldn't spend the money either though, as only half of it is yours.

I claimed for a chargeback from an airline (due to not receiving refund after 4 weeks), which AMEX had credited to my account last week. To my surprise, the real refund came in this morning, with the chargeback still showing on my account, so a double refund.

What is the best way to handle this? I have such little trust in the airline after dealing with them that I am worried of telling AMEX about the double charge so they take it back, only for the airline to then take the other one back too, leaving me with no refund. Can I just wait for the airline to claim back the disputed charge on their own?
The charge back received from the supplier to your AMEX account is subject to a 45 day period during which the supplier can claw the money back by submitting proof you were not due the money for whatever circumstances for which they supply documentation.

So do not do anything and you may well find that the AMEX account is deducted accordingly.

I would get in touch with Amex personally and ask their advice.  They may well cancel the chargeback themselves if you advise them the refund has come through anyway.

blindman is correct that the airline have 45 days to dispute the chargeback.  That said the airlines are in chaos at the moment and totally overwhelmed so they may not do that and it could fall through the net.   That wouldn't mean you've got away with it though as the airline could rightfully chase that money in the future.

The is one of the potential issues with the advice to get everyone just to chargeback en masse.  Most airlines are not refusing refunds, they are just so overhwelmed that they can't process them quickly.

That's fine by me if they can claw it back themselves without me having to get involved again, I have no intention of keeping it, just worried about it being taken back twice. My only concern is if I don't report it and let the airline chase it, would I be in any sort of trouble for not alerting either AMEX or the airline to it?
IMHO I would leave it for the 45 days ( don't "spend" it.) and then after another (say) week if it has not gone then contact AMEX to let them know.

    Moral of the story

Waiting 4 weeks for a refund in the current situation is not unusual and normally much longer.

    The chargeback was premature

I don't think you have any worry about it being taken back twice.  The airline have refunded you the transaction which is fine.  The chargeback should now fail or be reversed.  If at some point the airline charge you again to cancel your refund, that would be an unauthorised transaction and you could report that to Amex.

With hindisght maybe the Op did.

However there are LOTS of CC companies out there that are deliberately delaying charge  backs  or even denying customers the chance to start one, along with many Airlines playing hardball in actually processing refunds.

IMHO the Op did the right thing for their circumstances and has the money back.

I'm still waiting (4 months now) for a Virgin Atlantic refund and another 10 week wait for a charge back from an Air Newleand flight from my CC.

It's basically up to personal opinion on what people think is acceptable or not.  Whilst many think the airlines are deliberately playing hardball, others will accept that this is an unprecedented situation and that the airline customer service teams are overwhelmed and processing refunds is taking much longer than it should due to a colossal backlog, as well as reduced capacity due to C-19 measures.   I'm also waiting for an airline refund and into month 4.

I don't necessarily blame the OP for starting a chargeback.  However, having done so, IMHO the right thing to do is advise AMEX of the dual refund and leave it with them.  The AMEX online chat has zero wait time so it's not exactly a massive hassle.
