How quickly can you change energy provider (gas) again after just swapping ??

Hi,

A relative has recently changed energy provider to EDF (for gas only).  Their switchover date was Thursday 25th June but their online account is still showing as pending (not yet completed).

I've been helping with price comparisons and they would be much better off with one of several other providers.

Does anyone know how quickly they are able to change their service again? - Do they need to wait for everything to complete with EDF first ?

Thanks in advance

As a minimum, wait until this link shows their supply is with EDF...
Personally I'd wait until the final bill from their previous supplier has been sent as well, just to avoid complications, but that is not strictly necessary.
At this time of year they are probably not using much gas, so the fastest possible switch isn't going to be saving much anyway...

Thanks for the quick reply - That is great.

I've just checked that website and it is already showing EDF as their provider.  Therefore it sounds as though they could go ahead now.

If they don't wait until they get their final bill from their previous provider is there a chance that there could be an overlap between final/initial meter readings ?
  • Hi,
remember there may be an exit fee, unless still within 14 days cooling off period, so maybe need to factor that in.

I take it there is only a fee if the tariff has one, not another one for leaving quickly?

    Correct.
Also if there is an exit fee, check if they can move to another tariff with the same provider that does not have an exit fee, without triggering the exit fee.
A number of providers don't charge the fee as long as you are moving to another one of their own tariffs.

There will not be an overlap, but you do run the risk of things getting confusing as you will potentially have two final bills and meter readings in progress at the same time. It should all work out correctly but you increase the risk of things not going smoothly when you change rapidly.
Calculate how much you are really saving with this quick move, it is likely to be pennies this time of year with gas.

That answers that one then, if there is an exit fee on their tariff then they are going to have to pay it to leave, no routes around that it seems.
