We have a trip booked to Dubai in August 2020 which has been booked since November 2019 (2 adults, 2 children). We did not book travel insurance at the time of booking the holiday.  Now that companies have started to offer travel insurance again, if we went to Dubai and was taken ill with Covid whilst away, Will our policy cover any medical expenses for the treatment of Covid?  In addition to this, if the treatment date goes over our departure date, will the policy cover our collective repatriation?

    No.

    ......

    Maybe.
A number of new policies are covering people for emergency treatment or repatriation for Covid-19 contracted while in a resort, but not cases that arose by getting it beforehand in the UK, according to Brian Brown, of Defaqto - an information company which analyses insurance industry data.

I know the media have done a good job of scaremongering but you do realise catching it doesnt neccersarily equal a hospital stay, yes? That is very much the minority outcome.

It will involve isolation for 14 days though so maybe missed flights?    If you can rebook jasbir I would take that.

You would need to make sure the policy you buy does not exclude cover for COVID-19.  From the link on the BBC above it appears you can still buy new policies that include cover.

Aviva seem to imply that you are covered (within reason)

Question - If  contract Covid 19 while on a trip am I covered for medical treatment overseas?

Answer - Yes, however treatment is subject to what facilities are available locally and medical repatriation or transfer to alternative medical facilities is subject to any travel restrictions in place.

And how do you know EXACTLY when you caught the virus?
(I can see huge arguments with insurers who will say you caught it before the trip....)
The incubation period can 5 days or more.

And as Bradders1983 said-Don't believe the MEDIA hype that catching COVID19 means hospitalisation.
The vast majority just either feel unwell for a day or two or do not even know they have it.

This is not necessarily true. Obviously there are large numbers of people who have been mildly unwell over the last few months, but we do not know whether or not they had Covid-19.

OK, I shall be the smart aleck who posts the "told you so" comment. Had you arranged travel insurance at the time of booking your holiday, as MSE recommends, you would have been spared a good deal of uncertainty.

What isnt true? Are you claiming that the majority of people who catch this virus are hospitalised? Dont be silly.
