If she chooses to live further away from her job, that is her affair. She should be paid the proper rate for the job she does. I doubt Amazon asks each of its warehouse staff where they live, and then pays them different rates for the same job. An employer trying on such an idea in a unionised workplace would have no chance. Would the employer review her pay if she moved?

Altho geographic location isnt a protected characteristic re Equality - I would certainly think this reeks of discrimination on some grounds. I would go back with a big fat zero and ensure this is all in writing.

There is a lot of opportunism by employers too.

I am due to return to work 1 day per week from 1st July.  I am waiting for the details of whether this is to be back in on Wednesday, or maybe next Monday.  Anyway, I received a call this morning and although they still could not say what day it will be, they did say there will be a cut in rate of 12.5%.  The rate paid by the client is unchanged though.

Interestingly my employer, a local authority tried this on today. Not saying they would do it but it would be a consideration moving forward. Despite the fact pre covid-19 they were selling off our buildings and expecting us to work from home more. a local authority should know better, threats like that lead to strikes from those in the unions (not me)

It's a ridiculous suggestion and I can't imagine it's in any way legal. You would have to have serious doubts about whether the business will be surviving in the coming months.
