Hi, advice please

If a member of a group booking (4 people) for a holiday to Spain drops out due to health concerns over Covid 19, would the full fee still have to be paid for the 4? Thanks.

Depends who you booked with and the cancellation policy

If you referring to the holiday you have booked for in just over 3 weeks time I would imagine all monies for the full amount of passengers booked would be payable if you haven’t already.

I've looked at the small print, thanks for your help, but as it's a package holiday they can't tell me without speaking to each individual company.

There’s no easy answer to a question like this and as other posters suggest it’s very much depending on what’s booked and who with.

For example if it’s a proper package holiday with a tour operator like TUI or Jet2Holidays, you will usually be able to cancel individuals and they can reprice the holiday. i.e. let’s say a holiday was £750 per person, so £3000 for 4 people.  If one person drops out, it doesn’t necessarily mean the holiday price changes to £2250.  The tour operator will reprice, and there may be under occupancy supplements on the accommodation etc.  So for 3 people the holiday may now cost £2600.  The person dropping out might well expect their £750 back (less any deposit), but then that’s going to mean the remaining 3 have to make up £350 difference.

It becomes even more complicated if you’ve booked a Linked Package via someone like TravelRepublic or OnTheBeach etc.  They pair low cost flights with accommodation to create the “package”. The flights will almost certainly be non refundable, so that money is lost.  The accommodation will have its own separate terms but it’s not straight forward either...  i.e.  if you’ve paid for a room to sleep 4, or 2 rooms to sleep 2, there may be no refund due, as you still need those rooms. Then you get into an argument over whether the 3 should pay a higher share each or whether it’s tough luck for the 1.
  • Very well put bagand96.   I was going to say that unless the 4th person can claim on their insurance then they would probably have to forfeit their money if the holiday goes ahead as scheduled but as you say there may be other considerations to factor in!

If there is no FCO advice not to travel and they have no paperwork from a doctor barring travel it's disinclination to travel and not covered by insurance.

The 4th person will probably be liable for the full amount depending on how soon you are travelling.

It could be complicated by someone now becoming classed as a single traveller and attract the surcharges that normally entails..
