    The fact that after 4 years of car payments you have no money and are bricking it about an excess mileage and damage bill is proof that no, monthly payments aren't better for you and your budget. If they were OK for your budget and better for you you'd have a wedge in the bank at least enough to cover the potential bill and ideally you could use to make a lump sum payment or to buy another car outright in cash. You haven't.
    If you want to do what is best for your budget buy a car you can afford. Plenty of bargains sub £1000 on Facebook stuff for sale pages. You could buy one of those, run it into the ground, scrap it after a year and still save money over how you're currently running a car.
