Lots of companies do this, notably British Gas and Tesco.  You'll only find prohibitively expensive tariffs on BG's own website.  No point in calling anyone.

I left Eon because of that, they had a cheaper tariff through a comparison site and wouldn't give me it.
So I switched to an Eon tariff that didn't have an exit fee then switched to another company.
Now paying a DD of £75.50 instead of £77.
    Petty I know!

It's not petty, it's realising that existing customers aren't valued and taking your business elsewhere. Car and home insurance are worse for this in my experience.  Complaining is pointless,  taking your business elsewhere hurts - not only do they lose your business,  a competitor gains from it.

Also if you switch supplier via a comparison site, you can get cashback too.  So even your current supplier could give you similar rates to a competitor, if the competitor is slightly cheaper on unit rates & standing charges, then add in £25 cashback and that's a further £2 per month cheaper over a year....
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Look for deals without exit fee, you will save less but in case something goes wrong you could switch again without extra cost. It's how I started, It teach me to save, let me understand the market and when and how to switch properly.

... and don't compare the DD amounts, compare the actual tariff (price per kWh/Standing charge) for your actual usage..
