Evening all, I am after a bit of clarity please.
The company I work for needs to make upto 16 redundancies. I am one of two part timers we both work in accounts - one bought & one sales ledger - working the same hours 5 days per week.
The company is looking to make one of us redundant and the other to do the both jobs on their current hours & pay.
I always thought that if the job is redundant how is it possible that someone else can do it instead?
I appreciate that times are tough and a lot of businesses are trying to keep afloat but would one of us have a legitimate grievance?
Thank you

Just because a job is made redundant it does not mean the work is no longer needed. They can split the work up amongst others. They just can't make you redundant and hire someone to do the exact same job. If they have a suitable other job they have to offer you the chance to apply for it but with the amount of people that are being made redundant is probably pretty unlikely.0

Overall there's going to be less work to do. Combining the roles will enable the Company to maximise productivity and reduce costs. The person becomes redundant not neccessarily the role they perform.0

Thank you for your response. Currently the 'roles are at risk' but that usually translates as someone will lose out. I just wanted to check the fairness, as moving on two part time jobs will become one part time job, They are going to apply a selection process as to whom they will keep on but to be honest I'm not sure whether I would want to do 2 jobs for the price of 1 together with the extra pressures that go with it.

You won't be doing 2 jobs for the price of one. Each job will be smaller so you will be doing 2 half jobs equals 1 job for the price of 1.
If you don't like the change, then say so to the boss and make their selection decision easy - I am sure the other person will be glad to keep their job.0 -

I was thinking they are either been under worked now or the person left is going to be extremely busy.0
