Laura Ashley Furniture Insurance

Options

Within the last year we bought some furniture from Laura Ashley and were persuaded to also buy their furniture insurance.  Now that they have gone into administration our assumption is that they are no longer honouring that insurance. If we have a problem x years down the line,  who do we call and what are our rights please?

Many thanks.

Is the insurance actually LA or is it provided by staingard as per a quick search? If it's staingard then there's no issue with your policy unless they are also in trouble.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

We can't see your paperwork from here. Who was the "insurance" with? Merely the Laura Ashley company which is in administration or was there actually an insurance company involved?

The policy will be underwritten by an insurer, these names eg Laura Ashley, John Lewis etc sell insurance but someone else underwrites it but we can't see your policy.

It is with stainguard, many thanks.
  • We bought the insurance through LA for Stainguard, only Stainguard say that LA never paid them.

Stainguard e-mailed to say we weren't covered because Laura Ashley didn't pay them

Then I guess you want your money back from LA, or for them to pay Staingard. More than likely you will just be a creditor of LA and will need to contact the administrators.

  • Did you pay on credit card and was it over £100? If so contact your bank about a Section 75 claim to get the money back.

Even if it's not over £100 contact your bank anyway and ask about a chargeback.

It is actually an interesting question, in the first instance I would want to make sure it is actually an "insurance" policy rather than a "warranty"/"protection plan"... whilst people use the terms interchangeably there is a significant legal difference between the two.

A quick look at Stainguards website and it suggests they mainly do warranties not insurance however they are an appointed representative of another firm that is authorised to sell insurance (though again they themselves aren't insurers). It seems likely its a warranty but double checking is worth while doing as at least in some point in history insurances have been sold.

I'm not convinced that becomes the customer's problem.
