Expedia/Virgin Personal Cancellation cannot get refund

Via Expedia (incl Virgin Atlantic) I have/had a holiday booked to New York in November which we have chosen to cancel for personal safety reasons.  The hotel and city pass were cancelled and a full refund approved, but we have been told we would only get a credit note for the flights, although this may change.  We do not want a credit note, is this legal.  The ticket does say not transferable/refundable, but we would not have been cancelling had we felt safe going to New York this year.  Any help would be appreciated.

I think you have done quite well for non refundable ticket for 5 months time when nobody knows what the situation will be.

I have to agree.  You have chosen to cancel when the holiday is very likely to be able to go ahead.  You were lucky to be offered the credit note,  tbh, given that it is a change of mind rather than being unable to go.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

perfectly legal since you aren’t going because you don’t wish to travel. Normal cancellation t’s and c’s still apply even during COVID times.

The ticket does say not transferable/refundable,
you chose a non-refundable ticket rather than a refundable one (refundable LON-NYC with Virgin start at £2,600+)
Best you can hope for is that in the next 5 months there is a significant schedule change/cancellation that allows you to cancel for refund. If you choose to cancel now, the fare rules you agreed to will apply unless the airline has a waiver in place for your dates (this may include allowing a date change or future credit)

You are choosing not to travel - that’s your problem not theirs, and as such their option is very generous.

They could have told you to lump it, it’s good they’re offering anything.
