Poor quality fuel?

I have a drive system fault on my 2019 A4.
Audi assist have checked and it is due to poor fuel quality according to the EMI, the car is in the dealers and they want £300 plus fuel and filter to drain/clean and change the fuel (petrol).

I filled up last week at an Esso station and have contacted them to register a possible issue, they've been ok and waiting for customer service to give an answer.

My issue is that when I first got the car the fuel gauge was faulty, showed empty when full but sorted itself out after a short drive and top up, I'm thinking now that here may be a software fault rather than actual poor fuel? I don’t want to end up paying for the fuel draining and the the fault to return, thIs wouldn’t be covered under warranty.

  • It does need premium grade fuel i.e high octane, but this should not affect the filter but the turbo?

The OP describes it as an A4 not an RS4.  I don't think it needs 99RON if it isn't an RS4.  Just because it is aan Audi doesn't necessarily mean it must have 99RON

If it really was an issue with the fuel in the tanks at the station, then the operator would know about it. There would have been literally hundreds of people reporting similar issues, and the tank contents would have already been tested and found to be problematic.

The OP doesn't say if it's 35 (150ps) or 40 (190ps) spec, but both are just the vanilla VAG EA888 as seen in so much of all their mid-range cars - certainly no need for super unleaded, and there'll be a knock sensor to pull boost down anyway.

It’s a 35 spec, my preference would be a check of the sensor before dropping the fuel but I’m not sure the service centre will go that way?

Ask them to check the sensor.
